Sustainable Application

Many of the sustainable technologies which are becoming more mainstream have specific areas of application. For example, roof gardens are typically found in the urban environment whereas gardens and composting areas tend to be aspects which are more suitable for suburban or exurban application. The goal in this project is to find ways to move these sustainable technologies to the right of the diagram below and apply them to an urban environment in an effort to create a highly sustainable development while also creating a model for how these technologies can be applied in new ways.

Rings of Sustainability

The idea of sustainability is directly related to sprawl. The further people move from the core of the city, the less sustainable their lifestyle is. This image shows the hypothetical rings of sustainability which radiate out from downtown South Bend, IN. Within these rings there are small centers of sustainability where daily needs are easily accessible; however, many American suburbanites commute downtown for work. This distance between home and work creates a heavy dependence on the automobile which only pollutes the environment and consumes materials.

The blogging is underway! Now with each individual having their own design blog, it will be easier to stay informed with what’s going on with each student and their thesis project.
